Connections are very important.  But not all connections are the same.

I thrive on engaging with other people.  I love the feeling of relating, learning and laughing.  Those feelings amplify when I’m interacting with others.  Well, at least when it’s positive interactions – those are what I’m going to focus on…positive work community connections.  I’ve recently realized that I have different connection levels and I want to take some time to explore them and why each level is valuable.

  • Forever Friends:  The connections that form after an numerous experiences together that formed deep bonds.  These are the people that I turn to for advice, comfort, celebration…honestly, for everything.  I am so lucky to have developed several of these connections that last well beyond our mutual employment together.
  • Admired Advisors:  The connections that form after continuously building respect of someone develops into an inspiring source of value.  These are the people I turn to for challenges, the hard truths and what’s possible.
  • Collaborative Colleagues: The connections that form from working together – in the trenches.  These are the people that help me deliver my best work.  These are the people that I will have lunch with years later and it will feel like no time has passed and so happy to see and support them.
  • Marvelous Mentees:  The connections that form from a trusted advisor role.  These are the people that I can’t wait to hear about what they are doing, who they are helping, the difference they are making, etc.  I have learned that often benefit way more than I think I help(ed) them – so I’m always eager for each opportunity to engage.
  • Appreciated Associates:  The connections that form from being in similar circles/experiences but not really collaborating with.  These are the people that I appreciate their input, contributions and engagement.  I don’t necessarily seek them out but always appreciate our interactions when they do occur.
  • Acknowledged Acquaintances:  The connection from a limited interaction (maybe one introduction, or quick interactions, etc).  These are people that I acknowledge and hopefully recognize (although this keeps getting harder and harder for me – with volume of people and my age…lol).

And sometimes, I get lucky and someone fits in several of these categories – these are people that you usually hear me say “I just adore them on every level.”.

What other connection levels should one be engaging?
